3 pillars

between each of my passions, I’ve found 3 pillars that are common to all 3 of them, that I aspire to master in my own life- simplicity
- minimalism
- efficiency

backpacking:
- the ideal gear you can take backpacking is simple, purpose-built, and versatile
- the easiest way to lighten your pack is to eliminate items you don’t need
- being efficient with your packing, food, and movement enables greater comfort, enjoyment, and more distance over time
rowing:
the best rowers master simple movements, minimize disturbance to the run of the boat, and maximize efficiency when it comes to energy
waste
- Materials with the simplest construction are the easiest to repair or recycle and tend to be the least hazardous
- Overconsumption is one of the leading causes of waste generation
- The most efficient system is a closed loop system, where outputs become inputs for other processes and material lifecycles are maintained as long as possible
it’s taken time, experience, and reflection to realize how each of my passions connect back to each other through these 3 pillarseveryone has their own passions, but for me, discovering these connections has been a reinforcement for why these 3 matter so much to me

I'm a big fan of ultralight backpackingrather than reinvent the wheel, if you want to learn more about it, check out Yamatomichi's "Why Ultralight Backpacking"as a smaller guy, working toward an ultralight setup has brought me greater enjoyment and comfort while backpackingit's taken time and investment, slowly improving and refining my gear selection to reduce weight while maintaining comfort and function, but it's something that I think it is worth it for everyoneI've included my latest gear list below, which comes in just under a 10 pound baseweight (the standard for an ultralight setup), including a bear can for food storage and not including food and waterlike I mentioned under the 3 pillars, the best way to lighten your pack is to bring only what you need, and nothing morethis is something I aim to do for each trip: to be prepared, and not over-prepared for what I will face
